Jacob 5.0

Jacob is a JOY!  I can't believe he is already 5!  Because he and Alayna are so close his birthdays and milestones seem to sneak up and surprise me.  ("Are you sure you're 5?  Alayna just turned 6!")  He is SO excited to be 5!  He is such a pleasure to have in our home.  He is bright and inquisitive.  Sometimes all the questions drive me a bit batty but I want to encourage his curiosity and enthusiasm so I keep answering!  Sometimes we have to wait until Dad comes home for an explanation because some of his questions make it clear that he is a little physicist in training. He is very curious about how things work and why they do the things they do.  He is eager to please and very well behaved. Sometimes he likes to push James's buttons but I think that's part of a big brother's job.  He adores Alayna and he is so sweet with Ada.  She laughs for him in a way that she does with no other.  He is very thoughtful and giving.  He is such a treasure!

I don't know if I have shared this story on the blog before so I thought I would include it now.   When I was pregnant with Jacob we thought that we would name his James.  We knew he was a boy and that we wanted to name a boy James so we assumed THIS boy would be James.  After all, we didn't know if we'd ever have another boy so I felt some urgency to use the name as soon as we could.  Just after he was born I was holding him and said "this isn't James!"  Layne agreed so we were back to square one.  We had a long list of names but none of them seemed to fit.  Even in those early hours of his life we both felt that we were in the presence of a very special spirit and we felt impressed to look in the Old Testament for inspiration.  Just as we were beginning to despair we saw the name Jacob and knew we could stop looking. He is a serious yet joyful soul and I know that he has great potential to do wonderful things in this world.  I look forward to watching him grow in mind, body and spirit.
